Hasselt University was founded in 1973 and currently hosts approximately 6000 students and 1000 staff members. The university is focusing on a number of cutting-edge research lines. Research in the field of transportation is one of the fields of focus and is carried out by the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB). IMOB was founded in 2003, carries out fundamental and applied scientific research and organises educational activities in the fields of traffic safety and travel behaviour on a local, national and international level. Furthermore IMOB valorises research by translating research results into methodologies for applied research projects for companies and governments, but also by closing license-agreements with companies and establishing spin-offs (3 spin-offs already established).
IMOB is an established institute in the field of transportation in Belgium and currently has a team of about 40 permanent staff members completed by as many guest members. The majority of them are professors, researchers and Ph.D. candidates with a background mostly in the field of traffic safety and transportation, but also in economics, psychology, sociology, engineering, mathematics, architecture and informatics. The presence of a multidisciplinary academic staff allows to approach transportation research questions from a multidisciplinary point of view. The academic staff is supported by an IT team and a Marketing & Communication department.
